THE BOOK OF LIFE
words and music (c) 1993 Nancy Ellen Abrams

May you be inscribed in the Book of Life
Though our fates may at any time be sealed
So often I vow, "I'm going through that door!"
But habit holds me back from being healed

The door's still open
What will be is not determined yet
The door's still open
But only till sunset

The door's still open
I can pass now, if I dare
The door's still open
One must live one’s prayer

Rabbi Susya said as he lay dying
"In the world to come, I shall be held
To account not for failing to be Moses
But for failing to have been myself"

Yet we're also held
To account for something more:
All permitted pleasures we did
Not enjoy

So if I beat my chest
I've misunderstood the rest:
The art of life is getting to "L'Chaim!"
From "Oy!"

The door's still open
There's no time now to pack
The door's still open
Trust and don't look back

The door's still open
Ancient power fills the air
Never will it be easier
Than tonight to live my prayer
