THE HANDWRITING OF GOD
words and music (c) 1992 Nancy Ellen Abrams
Genesis says on the first day
God said, "Let there be light!"
It was three days later that the sun, moon and stars
Were created to illuminate the night
I'm not the first to notice
Three thousand years ago they cared
Where did that first light come from
When the sun, moon, and stars weren't there?
Some said it was the auras of the holy
Or a metaphor for wisdom or grace
But science has found the first light
And it's everywhere in space
The oldest mysteries are the deepest
Every myth of origin has flaws
When a question never dies
It's keeping us alive
It's coded in our genes to long for awe
Millions of years before the first star
Billions before our moon and sun
The thermal light that fills the universe
Was the only one
Spewed out from the Big Bang
Fifteen billion years ago
It flows in all directions
As far as we can know
Now science has seen patterns in the first light
But with vision so blurred
We stare in awe at the handwriting of God
But we can't make out the words
The oldest mysteries are the deepest
Every myth of origin has flaws
When a question never dies
It's keeping us alive
It's coded in our genes to search for awe
God's secrets are written in the first light
The patterns are the words to penetrate
Soon we'll be reading God's journal of the first day
With no church to mediate
The oldest mystery is creation
We're reaching toward the awesome fireball
From the truths we soon will know
A grand new myth must grow
It's coded in our genes to feast on awe
