Joel Primack

Joel Primack, professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is one of the world’s foremost cosmologists and one of the inventors and developers of the theory of Cold Dark Matter, which is central to our understanding of how the modern universe formed. He uses supercomputers to simulate hypothetical universes, seeing how universes created according to competing theories compare to the actual universe we observe.

He has also done fundamental work on elementary particle physics. He helped to initiate the Congressional Science Fellowship program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the AAAS Science and Human Rights program, the American Physical Society (APS) program of studies of public issues, and the APS Forum on Physics and Society.

He has participated in programs on science and Judaism, he is chairman of the advisory committee for the AAAS Program of Dialogue Between Science and Religion, and he was both advisor to and a participant in the 1996-98 Science and the Spiritual Quest program. He is a Fellow of the APS and of the AAAS, and a recipient of a Humboldt Award.
